About Intelligence: Can I learn to use a computer?
When people talk about learning to use computers, they often say things like the following:
• I am just a beginner & don't know if I can learn...
• I am intimidated by the computer because...
These and other similar statements reflect the fact that learning is more than just an intellectual exercise. A persons ability to learn how to use a computer is very much influenced by how they feel, their level of confidence and the sum total of their life experience and events up to the time that the choose to learn more how to use a computer. This is often referred to as Emotional Intelligence. One definition of Emotional Intelligence states that:
"Emotional Intelligence is a way of recognizing, understanding, and choosing how we think, feel, and act. It shapes our interactions with others and our understanding of ourselves. It defines how and what we learn; it allows us to set priorities; it determines the majority of our daily actions. Building confidence is almost always an important part of the tuition process and can require challenging a person's world view. Sometimes this requires networking with other agencies to help a person to build self esteem and get professional support during the learning process. Simply put, if a person does not feel good about themselves then they will not have the passion to learn well and will not go forward. Passion that endures is absolutely fundamental to how much a person can learn about using a computer. Therefore, we seek to invite people to consider how they can work towards higher levels of confidence.
